There are a number of reasons that motivates couples and individuals to embark on a self-build project, here are just a few.

Building your own home offers the opportunity to design a home that meets your unique requirements. Working within the restraints laid down by the local planning authority the external appearance as well as the room layouts can be tailored to meet your needs and lifestyle.

The majority of self-builders are very environmentally aware, they would like to be able to live in a home that is sustainable and very thermally efficient. Being a self-builder means that these aspirations can become a reality.

There is no doubt that building your own home will cost less than buying the equivalent sized home on the open market. This means that you could either really save money, or alternatively use the money to build a house bigger than your budget would allow you to purchase on the open market.

However the amount saved will be determined by the way you organize the build. If you employ a main contractor to carry out the works for you he/she will be charging you a margin out of every aspect of the build and therefore your potential savings will be minimised. At the other end of the scale, if you employ all the sub-contractors directly and purchase the materials yourself then the savings will be considerable, typically at least 25%.

The route you go will of course reflect the skill sets you possess and the time you have to dedicate to the project. Self project management need not be too onerous, but you will need to be a well organized person! We are always able to offer help and advice, to recommend trades people to get quotes from and to help in the purchasing of materials.

Building your own home allows you to incorporate products and technologies that may not be readily available in other houses. This may not be merely restricted to recent innovations, for example self-builders often put in under floor heating, decade's old technology yet still relatively rare in open market houses.

Although perhaps not the main reason to become a self-builder, the personal satisfaction that can be gained from successfully completing a build project should not be underestimated. The opportunity to leave your mark on the world is not given to many people, nor is the chance to build a home for your own family.
