Open Panel System

The frame most commonly used in timber frame construction is the open panel system.

Open Panel Frames

In this frame, external wall panels arrive with sheathing board and membrane attached, leaving the stud work open for insulation and wall boarding after first-fix electrics. Internal racking panels have sheathing on one side, while non-load-bearing walls consist of open stud work.

External panel stud size varies with insulation needs. The standard 140mm stud, with 140mm mineral wool, achieves a U-value of 0.22W/m²K, exceeding the 0.30W/m²K limit for external walls.

For better thermal performance, 184mm or 235mm studwork can be used, achieving U-values of 0.18W/m²K and 0.15W/m²K with a 50mm cavity and 100mm cladding block.

As well as the different stud sizes All Timber Frames offers the client a choice of external sheathing boards, plywood, OSB or Panelvent, and a choice of exterior membrane, either a reflective thermo membrane or standard house wrap.
